An interesting note about mastodon... Setting up your own instance is really akin to be adrift on your own island. The only people you see are people you follow, and explore and local tabs are completely empty. The only way to get content is to know what content you want already.

@georgyo I find the best way to approach it is not "how do I connect with the entire world", but "let's get a few people in my existing community involved, and grow from there." FWIW after the first few weeks I removed the explore and local tabs, and rely on reboosts and connections.

@georgyo My network has grown organically based on a few starting points. An old masto tradition that seems to have dried up is people posting lists of interesting users to follow; maybe that needs to come back.
